U.S. federal filing information for 2025 returns, checked October 7, 2026. General information, not personalized tax advice. HGID currently earns no commission from the Jackson Hewitt or IRS links on this page.

If “finish taxes” has been living on your list since spring, this is the week to give it an actual appointment. The goal is an accurate, accepted return, with a fee you understand. A tax-software upgrade is not automatically the first step.

Start here: For most taxpayers who properly obtained a filing extension, the federal filing deadline is October 15, 2026. An extension gave extra time to file, not extra time to pay. Disaster relief and other special rules can change your deadline; check your circumstances with the IRS.

The IRS extension guidance explains the filing/payment distinction. Do not assume an October deadline erased interest or penalties on unpaid amounts.

Check IRS Free File before paying.

For this filing season, IRS Free File Guided Tax Software is available to eligible taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. Each participating provider has its own eligibility rules, and state filing may cost extra. Start through the IRS Free File page, rather than assuming the same provider’s commercial homepage will show the free offer.

Above the income limit, Free File Fillable Forms offer federal forms for people comfortable preparing their own return. They do not include state filing. A free route is valuable only if it supports your return and you can use it accurately.

Where Jackson Hewitt’s $25 option fits

Jackson Hewitt’s official online page currently advertises $25 for DIY federal and state filing, including multiple state returns. This is the online software offer, not a quoted price for an appointment with a tax professional.

It may be worth comparing if your free option charges for state returns or does not fit your eligibility. Check supported forms before starting, especially if you have self-employment income, investments, rental property or other less routine situations. Online technical chat support is different from having a professional prepare or review your return.

The advertised filing fee is not necessarily every possible fee. Paying fees from your refund can involve an additional eCollect charge. Review the final fee screen and payment choices before submitting.

Your filing appointment needs a checklist.

  1. Gather income statements, last year’s return, expense records and the details needed for your filing situation.
  2. Check your actual federal and state deadlines.
  3. Compare the free option’s eligibility and forms with the paid alternative.
  4. Read every entry before submitting, including names, identifying information and bank details.
  5. Save submission and acceptance confirmations. “Submitted” and “accepted” are different checkpoints.

If you cannot pay the amount due, investigate IRS payment options rather than treating an unpaid balance as a reason to ignore filing. A qualified tax professional can help with case-specific questions.

The HGID verdict

Use a qualifying free option when it does the job. Compare Jackson Hewitt Online when its flat fee solves a real state-filing or eligibility problem. Pay for professional help when you need expertise, not because a deadline has made every upsell sound reassuring.

We will only add a commission-earning link after verifying an active advertiser relationship. A useful comparison should stand on its own while that approval is pending.
